Glam Bam Santa

One week to go til the merry merry sleigh ride!  And we've been slacking this year.  Sorry about that, folks.  We're trying to make it up, and if we have to do it again next year, well, so be it!!!

Wanna thank our good friends Mark W. and Thomas M. who make killer xmas comps every year and send them out to us.  We steal liberally from 'em, and appreciate all their sharing!

So, let's dip into our Xmas stockings and see what we got today, with a special bonus at the end!

We're gonna go all power pop/jangly/glam to start us off today!  What could be better than a 1,2,3,4 punch of T.Rex, Cheap Trick, Dwight Tilley, and Don Dixon (the king of jangle and producer of early REM) to get us boppin' to the Holiday spirit?  Aw, yeah!

Country fans, don't despair....we've got Merle Lindsay and the Oklahoma Night Riders giving us an "Old Timey Christmas".

Betty Lloyd satisfies our Soul Christmas cookie yearnings with "Six Days to Christmas".

And for the indie kids...how about the progenitors of lo-fi, primal indie rawk, Beat Happening giving us a twisted candy cane take on Xmas day?  Yummy!

As a bonus, another of our world famous Xmas mixes, A Big Rock Candy Cane Xmas!!!!  Another classic compilation of some of the many great and essential tunes we've presented in years past.  If you don't already have it, grab it now!  Your Xmas Eve will never be better, if you're not playing this mix!!

Santa's a Boppin' Mad Man!

Wrapping Up Christmas

We made it! It's Christmas Eve (or Shane Macgowan Eve, since we've never met a joke we couldn't drive into the ground...but hey, the man's birthday is on December 25th)! We're not done yet, of course, as we'll finish out the year with our Top Ten lists and sumsuch, starting the day after Christmas.

Below you'll find our final Christmas Mix of the year. It's a greatest hits collection of the songs we posted this year, with nifty soundbites.

But first, the greatest Christmas song ever written. I do this every damn year, so it's no surprise. But in these increasingly cynical times, full of fear, manufactured or real, and isolation, where we retreat into our digital facades, and stake our lives on a sound bite, this song seems to take on more relevance to us here at the Mountain with each passing year. The song hopes to hope, and dreams to dream. Between the ragged voice from hell and angelic voice of heaven, the song becomes something human. And in the end, I guess, all we have is each other. I built my dreams around you, indeed.

The Pogues: Fairytale of New York (mp3)

Thanks to all who stopped by for the sleigh ride. Here's wishing you a better day, and days ahead, now matter how you choose to celebrate.

Santa's Complaint

Is it Christmas yet? Damn, I'm about ready to rip open all the presents under the tree, Mrs. Mountain's included. Well, it is the season for impatience, innit? Gimme Gimme!

Naw, I kid. But we've got some folks in today's post who'd like to express some opinions about the Holidays and what the hell is and isn't under their tree. Or in their beds. If'n you know what I mean.

So it's a Blues Christmas at the Mountain today, and it's about time. We've got The Black Ace, Jimmy Witherspoon, and Bumble Bee Slim with a litany of wants and desires for the Holidays. Seems as if Santa was a little selective with his visits. Luckily, we've got Lead Belly to spread a little a little cheer. No, really.

Santa's Got A Sack O'Woe!

Jimmy Witherspoon: How I Hate To See Xmas Come Around (Christmas Blues) (mp3)

Ho Ho Loopy Lu

It's a nasty, winter day here in the politically exciting city of Chicago. Perfect for staying in, drinking some egg nog and rapping...errr....wrapping.

Forget what we've said previously, today is the greatest Holiday post ever. Really. We mean it this time. At least until the next one.

We could do a year of Billy Childish posts (maybe someone out there should) and still not scratch the surface of his body of work. We had some keen Holiday tracks from the man last year and, well hell, why not some more this year?

From the single released in conjunction with last year's Christmas record, "Christmas 1979" we've got a couple of stocking stuffers courtesy of Wild Billy Childish and the Musicians of the British Empire. This is truly as good as it gets.

But wait, there's more.

We've got a couple more super seasonal snow bound Xmas tracks for ya. Courtesy of Norton (remember them from earlier?), we've got The Kaisers getting mod on our gift-wrapped asses, and Donny Burns swingin' beatnik cool.

Don't know what that feller above is doin' takin' off his sweater.  Perhaps he's preparin' to give the lovely lady next to him a very special Xmas present.  Aint none of our business, of course, but it is Christmas, and the time for giving...and we're not opposed to spreading our love wherever it may be welcomed.  And who's not turned on by the present offered under that bouffant?  Good Xmas times, we're sure...

Well, that's done, so how about a brand spankin' new Xmas mix for yr next Holiday party.  Hell, collect 'em all (and maybe, if demand demands, we'll post all our previous years' mixes...you tell us what you want).  We're compilin' all our previous years' tunes into a series of mixes for yr listening enjoyment, consarnit!  Fill yr damn stocking with this, daddy-o....

Hee Haw Ho Ho

Something, something, North Pole...Something, something, North Pole.

Free song request to whoever correctly identifies that reference.

It's two week 'til Shane MacGowan's and Jesus's birthday. And we've got all your Holiday needs covered right here.

This may be the greatest Christmas post ever, and never let it be said we're not afraid of a little hyperbole. We have a re-post request of such magnitude, it's gonna take us days to honor, so gird your loins.

But first, we've decided that, for today, at least, Boxcar Willie's "Hee Haw Honey" is our number one, very most favoritest Christmas song of all time. It features the immortal line: "I want a Hee Haw Honey or a Playboy Bunny, under my Christmas tree." And it gets better from there, with a special request for Santa.

But we can't let the Holiday hoedown rest with just that fine tune, oh no. It's the season for excess. So we've also got Dale Watson weighing in with a boot-scootin' "Honky Tonk Christmas". And fiddle king and devil slayer Charlie Daniels just wants to get back to Dixie for the Holidays, dammit.

Now for that re-post. Last year we did a series of mixes featuring many of the songs we've posted over the several years of Holiday whoop dee dos. And we had a visitor request that we re-gift 'em. And we thought, well, why the hell not? So for the next 5 days, our re-post special will be mixes, mixes, mixes. But grab 'em quick, cuz they'll be available for a bandwidth busting limited time only. Please enjoy responsibly.

Fezzes Navy David!

Santa's Lap

Christmas is a little lonelier now that Bettie Page is no longer with us. To say she was an...inspiration to us is saying too little. The afterlife just got a whole lot sexier.

I 'spect y'all here for a little toasty Yuletide joy, and not to hear a feller relive seminal moments of his youth. Well, as ever, we've got just what you need. And this one goes out to Bettie. Just cuz.

The Moaners are a little nervous about sitting on Santa's lap. Perhaps he's been looking at old pinups. And The Vandals are prepared to celebrate a very special Christmas. Maybe they'll take fashion tips from Ms. Page.

A Spankin' Good Holiday!

A Big Rock Aluminum Christmas

Damn, I miss Reverend Frost. His was our favorite blog out there in the whole worldwide interwebs. Our mixes are but a pale imitation of his brilliant work over the year. His "Bloody Christmas" mixes (scroll down), in particular, were slabs of Holiday genius. Let's hope he makes it back to us soon.

Well, we've had selections from Seasons 1,2, and 3 from past Big Rock Candy Mountain Holiday Blow-Outs on past Saturdays, but many songs from each season got left out (due to thematic reasons, repeated artists, space issues(do you really want to sit through a download 2-3 hours long?), etc.). Today, we're gathering up most of those lost orphans from each previous season for another peachy, Technicolor, spinning lights selection. And we're not done yet.

As usual, the mp3 link follows the track listing.

Christmas Ghosts

Getting closer to Christmas, and the birth of baby Jesus (aka Shane MacGowan).  We're under a blanket of snow, with more coming...what could be more festive!!!!

We got a Santa's grab bag of special presents for y'all today, including a re-post of a mix from years past (and thanks again to all who helped us out).  Oh, and Santa Claus can be whatever damn nationality he wants...fuck the haters, it's all about the love, baby!

A Western Swing tune kicks us off, courtesy of the legendary Bob Wills!  What could be better?  Well, stick around...

Huey "Piano" Smith brings the old school R'n'B , rollicking and horn-fueled!  How do we follow that up?  Well, with the most perfect pop band on the planet, The dB's, we raise the stakes, a perfectly beautiful holiday meditation. Then, it's J&M Chain inspired Raveonettes with a feedback/honey kissed ode to Holiday love gone missing.

Rounding it out,  a couple of hillbilly'n' psych inspired tales of loneliness, with sandy grit in lieu of snow.  Both are "traveling songs".   Jim White is stuck in a Greyhound station, with lost love.  And Frontier Ruckus are braving the snow on Xmas Eve, banjo-driven wintry night, full of AM crackle and reflection.

And, as a bonus...we're re-posting a classic Xmas mix we made lo these many moons ago (comprising previously posted tunes).  If y'all haven't heard it yet, grab it now!!!  And thank all of our regular visitors for helping us recover!  Look for it way at the bottom...You are the very air we breathe...

Sexy Christmas Baby

Darlene Love was robbed. Just sayin'.

Fruitcake! We've got Fruitcake! We've got lots and lots of Fruitcake! (hum along). Man, we love fruitcakes. Can't get enough of 'em. Yummy, yum yum yum.

With a day to go, we've got a whole fruitcake of tunes to serve up. Christmas Eve, we'll have our favorite Xmas song (a no-brainer, really), and we'll follow that up (after a few days' rest) with our Top 50 List. Pretty exciting, innit it?

Assorted nuts today, to go with the Fruitcake. Beat noir from Morphine (Mark Sandman's death is still one of the saddest moments in recent musical history), Bluegrass from The Stanley Brothers, Irish punk Holiday drinking from Monkhouse, and garage kings outta Columbus, The New Bomb Turks doing an essential version of an old classic.

What, you want more? Ok. How about some old timey Country and Western from Al Dexter, 60's organ-drenched soul garagers The Galaxies, and Darlene Love and the E Street Band, doing their best 80's bar band Xmas lights strung bar band rave-up (And no, we're not apologizing. It's a great song, despite the soundtrack it's from.... It's fucking Darlene Love!)

Bonus Re-Posts
(and you'll have to wait 'til next year for more) today are a swinging, jumpin', jivin', rockin' affair. Dig it, cats: Cordell Jackson, Wanda Jackson, The Staple Singers, The Youngsters, The Kaisers, Rufus Thomas, and The Marquees! Does it get much better than this??

Xmas Lights Spin

So. A little less conversation, a little more Xmas action. One more post after today and then we hit our extra special Christmas Eve post. After that, it's our Top 50 Records Of The Year, and other various and sundries. Then it's back to normalcy. We hope y'all have enjoyed our little bit of Holiday insanity. We do this every year, and Mrs. Mountain has been eternally patient.

More mixed bag of toys today (and probably tomorrow).

We got an email from a feller who shared a couple of great Christmas tracks from Country/Blues/Bar Band geniuses, Better Off Dead. We're officially converts, based on their Christmas songs alone. Both tunes are the kind of boozy, slightly nihilistic, Yuletide cheer(s) we love so dearly round these part. Essential Christmas listening, we say. The tracks come from the record "A King Family Christmas", which was a benefit album for musicians who were victims of Hurricane Katrina. So well worth your time. And the songs kick serious Big Rock Candy Mountain-style ass.

Following that, we've got a little revved-up hot-rod punk from The Groovie Ghoulies, more punk from Goldblade, featuring the immortal Poly Styrene (Yes! That Poly Styrene!), and, finally, a bummer trimming from indie legends, The Radar Brothers.

For our Bonus Re-Posts, we've got some of our favorite bands/artists hitting the Holiday tip. Most of these tunes are...well...kinda bummers. But that's ok. Nuthin' says Christmas like a lonely night with a drink in hand and the Xmas lights a'spinnin'. Your Holiday bonuses are brought to you by Red Red Meat (now Califone), The Palace Brothers, Mary Gauthier, Okkervil River, The Willard Grant Conspiracy, and Mark Eitzel. Oh my. That's a hell of a line up. Enjoy, but don't hate yourself.

Junk Shop Xmas

25 days to go until Shane Macgowan's birthday! And if you're wondering what all the fuss about the elephant was earlier this week, check out track 12 on the mix below.

They're super swell sites, and you're gonna want to visit them daily. We'll get those links and more up on the sidebar over the weekend.

For now, please enjoy the following mix. Mp3 link follows the track listing.

Here It Is Christmas

Hey, how's it goin'?  We've just about reached the end of our little Holiday shindig.  'Couple more Yuletide posts after this, and then we begin  our Best Records Of The Year list, followed by normal (hopefully more regular) postings.  Gosh, wonder what we'll post on Christmas Eve?  Well before then, we've got two super swell posts for y'all.

So, as the snow is falling here in Chicago, and the Xmas lites spin...we get all weepy and sentimental, such is our wont.  And what better way to celebrate our Seasonal Affective Disorder (no, really...somebody actually came up with that...and, no, we don't actually have that...good gravy haven't you caught the tone of our posts?), then some classic Holiday 3 hanky tearjerkers?  Add in some talky moralisms, and we're sent for a night of Christmas "spirits".   Oh my, yes.

So let's raise a glass of distilled sadness to our terribly concerned friends Hank Snow (whom we actually love dearly, in so many ways), Sonny James, Bobby Goldsboro, Rev. A.W. Nix, Jim Eanes, and Rev. J.M. Gates.

But, wait, there's more.  We would be remiss in this post to not include the King of the Grand Holiday Weeper, the very man himself, Mr. Red Sovine!  And we've got not one but two (two!)  of his classics, including the very greatest of all (a Re-Post Special), "Here It Is Christmas".  You simply have to hear it to believe it!

Santa's Got a box o tissues and a big ol' bible in his sleigh! (opinions of the artists posted here do not necessarily reflect those of The Big Rock Candy Mountain..egad, just sayin').

Hank Snow: Christmas Wants (mp3)

Red Sovine: Is There Really A Santa Claus (mp3)

Sonny James: Christmas Letter (mp3)

Bobby Goldsboro: Look Around You (It's Christmas Time) (mp3)

Rev. A.W. Nix: How Will You Spend Your Christmas (mp3)

Jim Eanes and The Shenandoah Valley Boys: It Won't Seem Like Christmas (mp3)

Rev. J.M. Gates: Getting Ready For Christmas Day (mp3)

And A Very Special Re-Post (and the Greatest Weeper Of All)

Red Sovine: Here It Is Christmas (mp3)

Get out yr hankies, and have a merry, merry Christmas!

Junk Dealin' Santa

Ulp.  Missed a day of our Xmas madness.  Shame on us.  Been under the weather.  Gonna have a re-post today of one of the favorite Holiday mixes from years past.  There's been some demand for these, so we might have more of these popping up as bonuses over the next few weeks.

Back the "new" stuff tomorrow (or, at the least, the previously un-posted stuff).

As ever, the mp3 link follows each track listing.
