I'm back

Ok.

My previous URL got hijacked. I'm trying to get it back, as it was Blogger who cocked it all up. We'll see. For now, this is the new URL until the mess gets sorted. Also keep an eye on Barstool Mountain for any future announcements, as that site seems to have survived the blackout. Fingers crossed, folks. We had Marty Robbins all written up. Sadness.

If we can't get it all fixed, this address will be the new official home of Big Rock Candy Moutain, the terminally late Country, Western, and Trash blog you love so dearly.

Courage.

Big. Dumb.

Big Show Tonite. See the previous post, and stop by if you're in the Chicagoland area.

Oh, yeah, we've got Serge Gainsbourg up over at Barstool Mountain.

Now then.

Something a little different from the Mountain, for you weekend summer enjoyment. We aint kidding when we say big and dumb. Because, when the heat index goes up, and the amount of clothing goes down, you want some fine, mindless tunes pumping from your car, apartment, or home windows.

You probably know The Sweet (or just Sweet, depending on what year it was, and what album) from their classic sides "Fox On The Run" and "Ballroom Blitz". It's the music you listened to during your Dazed and Confused years, all Hesher hair, Satan signs, and a mountain of beer cans in the backseat. They were the pinnacle of glam rock, before falling off into bland hard rock late in the 70's. Oh, but when they were on, it was a glorious noise. Buzzsaw guitars (see: Wig Wam Bam), big drums, and sugar sweet melodies.

I'm really not joking here. We at the Mountain heartily endorse The Sweet (the early years) as a perfect summer soundtrack. Below are two of our favorite songs, period. "Wig-Wam-Bam" is sticky summer sex at it's finest, and "Funny Funny" is The Archies with balls.

As a bonus, we're gonna give you two covers from Gearhead Records' fine singles roundup, "Runnin' On Fumes". It's The Donnas and the Groovie Ghoulies putting their own stamp on our favorite Sweet songs. The Donnas in particular give a, errr, fascinating interpretation.

Recommended!

Scared of Guns

Did you book your tickets for Chicago this weekend? As mentioned in my previous post, we've got a swell show coming up on Friday, July 6th, brought to you by yours truly, Songs:Illinois, and Can You See The Sunset From The Southside, the three finest tastemakers in the Chicagoland area.

For 5 measly bucks, you get three bands and entrance into the finest dive in the South Loop, the legendary Cal's (400 South Wells), where the booze is cheap, the women are cheap, and the men are free (hell, they'll pay you). It's a Big Rock Candy Mountain kind of joint.

Who's playing, you ask? We've got Satellite 66 from the great land of Chicago. We've got Frontier Ruckus from Michigan, who Craig from Songs:Illinois recently gushed about.

And finally, we've got recent Chicago transplant, The Gunshy, who I think is the bee's knees.

Combining a little Tom Waits, a smidge of Eric Bachman/Crooked Fingers, and a mesa-top full of burnt desert filtered through urban neon sprawl, the Gunshy play a gritty Western noir through the greasy windows of your favorite Old Style bar.

Show starts at 10 p.m. Come by and look for the red-headed stranger in the John Deere cap (that'd be me, the walking stereotype).

'Til then, check out some Gunshy tunes below. Then hop over to Barstool Mountain, where we've got a couple more Gunshy tunes, ones that tend toward the more alcohol-infused aspect of the band (including the should-be-classic "$4 Pabst".)
