Truck Driver's Vice

It's snowing like a muther here in Chicago.

Got kind of theme running this week.

I've discussed my love of trucking music in past blogs. Even went so far as to promise semi-regular truckin' songs. That was awhile ago, but since I seem to be a bit more regular these days (no jokes please), I believe I might be able to keep that promise. At least bi-weekly. Really.

I'm exhausted from trudging around the snow tonite, so my rant about the brilliance of truckin' music's gonna have to wait for the next rig rockin' post. I'll start you off with a rather obscure little album I was lucky enough to find whilst trolling the web a few months ago. The album's titled Big Bertha the Truck Driving Queen, and the feller singin' goes by the handle Bud Brewer. Couldn't find much info on the net, but the songs were written by Gary Stewart. Hmmm....

Anyhow, the usual suspects (Dave Dudley, Red Simpson, Del Reeves, etc.)will pop up in future posts, but for now enjoy these scratchy nuggets of white line fever. I'll do better tomorrow.

Nice. I'm looking forward to the week. I even have a request -- "Diesel Smoke, Dangerous Curves," originally recorded by Red Simpson, I think. The title says it all.

YEA! Truckin' Thursdays! even if only a few times a month I think that's a great idea.

Cool find with the Bertha record, thanks for sharing.

btw -- Is it just truckers, or do other trades have a canon of anthems? Railroad engineers and cowboys come to mind, but there's gotta be others.... That's prolly a whole blog in itself.

Hi !

I Saw your blog and I just wanted to let you know I am the direct blood neice of Bud Brewer...he is still alive and lives near Ft. Myers, Fl...I am 34 years old and I have now written over 80 country, metal, rock and blues songs (lyrically) inspired by his lead....Bud was Black listed from the industry shortly after the release of Big Bertha but if you listen close... bands like the Sawyer Brown were definately given this song to hear like a demo as a basis for showing put together bands what talent really was... Sad part is they heard the demo changed one lyric and tried to cut the song the way my uncle sang it...Then they reaped the rewards !! As a writer I feel that keeping this type of music alive is a preservation of our past and what they have today is not REAL county !! Bud's real name is William and he has been called Bud since childhood - he was the first son of a family of seven children born to Willie G. Brewer (1997 dec.)and Katherine (Maples) Brewer (2004 dec.)...Bud now quietly resides in Florida with his wife - he had two children in his life who have now passed on Bambi Brewer (1980 dec.) and Kelly Brewer (2003 dec.). My uncle is a GREAT man and I am so glad to see that TRUE county music fans are still keeping his music alive 35 years later !! I write in the spirit of my legendary uncle hoping to bring back the songs we have lost about trucks' trains, prisons, drinking, and Maw Maw and Paw Paw's
Thank you for posting his music on your site ! :-)
